DETAILS:

South Asia Institute sits within the historic Motor Row District, near McCormick Place. Built in 1911 in the Second Empire style, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was originally built for the B.F. Goodrich warehouse and sales center to cater to the automotive needs of the general public and the automobile showrooms that dotted this area at the turn of the last century. The building’s symmetrical layout, strong vertical piers, and ornate cornices were designed to exude a sense of permanence and prestige, qualities that automotive companies wanted to project during the early 1900s when automobiles were symbols of progress and luxury. Recently the terracotta façade has been painstakingly restored to its original grandeur, while the interior has been extensively renovated to create spaces for art exhibitions, dance and music performances, film screenings, literary events, lectures and seminars. The institution also houses a research library, with over 1000+ books on South Asian art and culture, many of which are not available anywhere else in Chicago.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE:

First and second floor galleries are open for self-guided tours. There will be an hour-long guided tour starting at 1:30pm of the first floor exhibition, "Common Sky: The Solo Exhibition," an artistic exploration of the climate crisis and its profound impact on our planet by the South Asian artist Faisal Anwar. Another guided tour of the second floor exhibition, "Of Women, By Women: South Asian Feminist Art and Artists from the Hundal Collection," will be offered at noon. Finally, at 3:30pm, enjoy a performance of the original dance production "Cosmic Comedy" by Kathak Dancers from Uptown Rhythms.
