DETAILS:
Christ the Savior Orthodox Church occupies the former Apostolic Catholic Church, an offshoot of the Anglican church that has largely vanished. It was acquired by the Orthodox Church in America in 1996. The church's exterior masonry is a combination of red brick and limestone. It is designed in the Tudor style, recalling traditional Medieval English castles with the top of the walls adorned by the battlement. The wide entrance stair leads to the elaborate arched doorway. And the vast interior space is adorned by artfully crafted trusses supporting the roof with skylights. The complex includes a parish building. Among its owners was prominent 19th-century engineer Ellis Chesbrough who created the first Chicago water management system.
VISITOR EXPERIENCE:
The main floor of the church will be open. Optional guided tours will be provided by church volunteers.
