DETAILS:

UPDATE: The Pullman Visitor Center is currently closed due to the Federal Government shutdown. The Pullman Car Works, operated by the Pullman State Historic Site and located directly adjacent to the Administration Building, will be open for visitation and tours.

On Chicago’s Far South Side, the historic Town of Pullman transports visitors back to the 1880s and 1890s with more than 900 privately owned homes, tree-lined streets, parks, and 1881 railroad car-building workshops.  Described as “the City of Brick” in 1883 and “the World’s Most Perfect Town” in 1896, Pullman continues today as to prove its far-sighted design as one of the first planned industrial communities in the United States. At the center of the historic company town, the Pullman Car Works (1881) survives to tell its role in American labor history, including the 1894 Pullman Strike and Boycott.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE:

The 1881 Pullman Car Works, a part of the Pullman State Historic Site, will be open for curator-led tours inside the Front Erecting Shops’ north wing and the Rear Erecting Shops. Curator-led tours will begin at the east entry plaza of the Pullman State Historic Site parking lot, 610 E. 111th Street, at 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM, and 2:30 PM. The Pullman Car Works grounds also include interpretive signage for self-guided exploration.

Visitors must wear hard-soled, closed-toe footwear to enter the Front and Rear Erecting Shops. Hard hats will be provided.
