DETAILS:

Hawksmoor Chicago is housed in the LaSalle Street Cable Car Powerhouse, a striking three-story River North landmark. Originally opened in 1887, the building once powered a network of cable cars that carried over 100,000 workers into downtown each day. As one of the most important transportation hubs of its era, it played a key role in shaping the city’s industrial and commercial identity. It was originally designed by Charles Tyson Yerkes, a pivotal figure in the development of both Chicago’s and London’s mass transit systems. Hawksmoor’s design team honored the building’s history by preserving original features such as barrel-vaulted ceilings, exposed timber joists, and brickwork. Elements like reclaimed holophane pendant lights from Scotland and tile work inspired by London’s Underground stations further connect the space to its transit roots. The transformation thoughtfully blends historic preservation with new design inspired by the "Golden Age of Travel." The result is a space that celebrates its 19th-century legacy while serving as a modern dining destination.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE:

Guided tours are mandatory, with twice-daily large group presentations available on the third floor. Large historic images of the building will be spread throughout. During the day, the bars will be open for espresso service and craft beverages. On Sunday, guests can dine in the main dining room and enjoy a British Sunday Roast.
