DETAILS:
The First Unitarian Church of Chicago is a progressive religious community without a specific creed. The church was constructed in two main stages: The original chapel was completed in 1897 as part of the University of Chicago community, and in 1931, an expansion added a sanctuary in the English Perpendicular Gothic architectural style. The building's symbols, detailed by Von Ogden Vogt, combine both spiritual and practical pursuits emphasizing individual conscience, free inquiry, and shared values. The church includes a Crypt in its basement.
VISITOR EXPERIENCE:
Tours will be offered of the crypt, chapel, and sanctuary to explain some of the symbolism throughout at the top of each hour. A 15-minute documentary about the art and iconography of the church will play on a loop.
